Paris’ Hidden Gems: 5 Marvelous Museums in Paris

Posted February 26, 2018 by Aeon Tours

So you’ve tackled the impressionists at the Louvre, experienced the avant-garde Pompidou Centre, and even wandered the old railway station the d’Orsay calls home…now what else is there to see?

Fortunately, lots.

Museums abound in Paris (at last count there were over 200) and while many are world-renowned (with queues to match), there are many lesser-known, unsung museums waiting to be discovered during your time in Paris.

We’ve created a list of a few marvelous museums in Paris that are the perfect place to spend an afternoon.

Musée Dapper

Musée Dapper is a fascinating museum focused on African and Caribbean art. Its permanent collection focuses chiefly on masks and sculptures, but the museum also hosts events including films, concerts and shows. (35 bis Rue Paul Valéry, 75116 Paris, Entry Fee: €6, 11am – 7pm, closed Tues and Thurs)

Le Musée Carnavalet

The Carnavalet museum is devoted to the history of Paris and its inhabitants. Its collection is housed in over 100 rooms with topics that range from prehistoric Paris to the present. The building itself is provocative and has been historically restored and is very much part of the museum’s charm. (16 Rue des Francs Bourgeois, 75003 Paris, Entry fee: €5 (suggested donation), 10am – 6 pm, closed Mon)

Musée de L’Orangerie

On the smaller side, the Musée de l’Orangerie is perfect for a shorter trip. In fact, you can breeze through most of the museum in under 2 hours. While it is most known for being home to Claude Monet’s water-lily paintings, the Nymphéas, the museum also houses an immense collection by the likes of Matisse, Picasso, and Cézanne (Jardin des Tuileries, 75001 Paris, 9am – 6pm, closed Tues, Entry fee: €9)

Musée Gustave Moreau

Located in Moreau’s family home at the foot of Montmartre in the 9th arrondissement, the museum was designed entirely by the artist himself. There are more than 3 floors of the artist’s works, including over 4,000 drawings, watercolors and paintings. (14 rue de la Rochefoucauld, 75009 Paris, Mon, Wed, Thur: 10am to 12.45pm and 2pm to 5.15pm, Fri - Sun: 10am to 5.15pm. Entry fee: €6)

Musée Jacquemart-André

Owned and run by the Institute of France, the Jacquemart-André Museum is a collection of art, paintings, sculpture and exceptional furniture. It is located just off the Champs-Elysées and has lovely courtyard that provides a great respite from a busy day of tourist-ing.(158, bd Haussmann, 75008 Paris, Open Daily, from 10am to 6 pm, Entry fee: €12)
